A CREATIVE
LIFE

Alicia Beech never set out to become the artist she is today. For years she painted around the edges of her life.
Then life changed...

Growing up as an only child, Alicia remembers being quite content spending time alone drawing, colouring in, painting and writing. Mystical creatures, magical landscapes and horses were the predominant themes.
In 2015, she felt an overwhelming desire to start creating again. She experimented. A lot. Different techniques, different ideas. It was through this exploration that she fell in love with abstract art. It felt like an obsession. Even when she wasn’t painting, it was on her mind.
Her work began to sell in New Zealand and overseas.
And then life happened....
In 2018, Alicia was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. Following a year of treatment, she found herself looking at life, and the world around her, differently.

That same year Alicia and her partner moved to a lifestyle property in Te Puna. With it came a large garden and, somewhat unexpectedly, an interest in gardening.
Hands in the earth, she began to heal
The garden became another place to create.
Fascinated by the colour and personalities of plants, Alicia began planting different varieties of flowers together, experimenting by growing them alongside each other so that as they grew they would create unique compositions that slowly changed with the seasons.
Without intending it, the garden began finding its way into her paintings.
By 2022, gardening and painting had become two parts of the same creative life. Each one fuelled the other. The garden gave her endless reasons to paint, and painting gave her new reasons to look.
With nature as her muse, Alicia’s style continues to evolve, with imagination, colour and freedom remaining central to her practice.
Each painting takes many hours to create. Colours, motifs, patterns and compositions emerge intuitively before gradually giving way to the precision and considered detail that has come to define her work.

Alicia works from her lovingly renovated home studio in Te Puna, Tauranga, with her studio buddy Mr Bear by her side.
Her work has exhibited in New Zealand and Australia, with her first solo exhibition, Finding Eden, at Turua Gallery in Auckland, selling out. Her work is held in private collections in New Zealand and overseas.
Alicia's studio is open by appointment to view available paintings or discuss a commission.
